ZARYA
âHow are you doing?â Zarya didnât mean to ask Daire the same question that had come from her lips several times already.
It was nearly dark, and soon she hoped they could try to leave. She was becoming nervous and no longer wanted to sit in silence.
âFine.â His tilted his head back against the counter, his eyes closed.
âYou donât look it.â
Daire snapped his head up. âIâm hungry.â
A chill went through her body. Sheâd already snuck around looking for food and found a protein bar, but that wasnât going to sustain a vampire. Sheâd had a little, but he hadnât. And he was coming off a feeding frenzy. For him, she was a meal. Zarya hoped heâd keep himself in check, and soon they would get the chance to get the hell out of there.
She closed the small book that Alatar had written. She looked at the cover, running her thumb on the worn leather. It had taken a few hours to read the book despite it being thin. The information was dense and hard-going at times. And she wasnât sure if she believed what she was reading.
âWorth the read?â Daire asked as he sat on the floor opposite her, resting one arm on his bent knee while the other leg extended straight in front of him.
Zarya shrugged. She handed him the book, Hidden Powers of the Lost, gesturing him to take it to read.
Daire shook his head.
âAlatar meant it for you to read.â
âNo.â He looked back at her with his dark eyes. âYou give me the abridged version.â
Zarya sighed. She wasnât sure if sheâd worked it out. Based on the fact that his new fangs were in his pocket and no longer functional, she had managed to put a few points together with the help of the book.
âAlatar believes that even though you might think youâre weaker because you are different, youâre not,â she said carefully, knowing Daire wasnât going to like this at all.
âItâs fine for someone like himself to write such nonsense.â
âThatâs where youâre wrong.â
âIâm rarely wrong,â he spat back at her, the frustration evident in his voice.
Was it more than what she was saying? Was he starting to lose control? Zarya resisted the temptation to look once more out through the glass panel on the door. She didnât want to see Melusine walking close by or any of the other witches who werenât giving up on their search. She and Daire would be found soon if they didnât take a risk on trying to get out of here. That was what she should be thinking about, not recounting the book to Daire or worrying if he was about to suck out her blood. Zarya knew damn well he was still capable of feeding, but it just wasnât going to be the fangs he sank into her. She glanced at his fingers. The nails were normal and hadnât changed to their sharp form. That was at least one good thing, she supposed.
âMaybe you need to read it instead of attacking me.
